Antibiotics are used to fight off the infections that are caused by bacteria and go on to cause bacterial meningitis. These antibiotics are most beneficial when they are used promptly after discovering any signs of bacterial meningitis.
Hows are they given?
Once in a hospital a doctor will administer the antibiotics either through an IV which pumps the antibiotics through the blood stream. Or given through the mouth without an IV, this method has proven to be less successful then antibiotics that are sent right into the blood stream
The best antibiotics?
A doctor will perform a spinal tap to get the fluid that surronds the spine when a patient has bacterial meningitis to figure out the best type of antibiotic to be given to each individual patient.
The most commonly used antibiotics come from a group of antibiotics called cephalosporins. Which includes Rocephin and Claforan, and Gentamicin. Another type is Cipro which is the most common antibiotic used to treat bacterial meningitis.
Are there issues with antibiotics?
Antibiotic resistance is a huge issue to the treatment of bacterial meningitis because most the antibiotic that have worked and been used in the past no longer work to treat the disease.
But there are some good antibiotic that are used if nothing else works such as Vancomycin, Rifadin and Rocephin.
