Meningitis is an infection of the membranes that cover the brain and spinal cord, known as meninges.
Her Story
In 2010, The Oxford Vaccines Group led by Professor Andrew Pollard performed a study at 26 major UK hospitals, through the study they hoped to find the answers for the cause of meningitis in children. The researchers hoped to gain more information about the signs and symptoms and they also wanted to determine the major differences between Viral and Bacterial Meningitis is children.
One of the children tested was Charlotte Daniels age 2, who had meningococcal meningitis and as a result had to have multiple amputations. By the end of her 6 week stay at the hospital she had both of her arms amputated below the elbow and both legs amputated below the knee.
